Hello and Welcome to Campus Fire Safety.com. We are a group of campus
fire safety professionals, specializing in Fire and Life-Safety programs for Colleges, Universities, Public & Private School Districts, and Fraternity & Sorority organizations.
We provide a variety of services from on site consultation to training program
development. Please visit our services section to learn more about how we can
assist your organization. Our goal is to provide services and
information to those groups who may not have the resources of a dedicated fire
safety professional. Also, we will assist parents in obtaining information about the fire
safe status of the educational facility they are considering sending their
child/children. Please visit us at

Our Mission Statement
With the recent fires and fire related deaths on college campuses and in student living facilities, our goal is to provide quality fire & life-safety training, education and resources to keep fire safety on campus proactive not reactive.
What is the Great Escape on Campus?
Stay low because heat and smoke rise, stop, drop and roll, keep fresh batteries in the smoke detector, and feel doors for heat. These adages of fire safety are easy to take for granted. That is until you are in a residence hall corridor filled with smoke, relying on the walls for balance and direction. You extend an arm and realize your hand has disappeared. Disorientation sets in as a thick haze swirls in the hallway and a blaring smoke alarm makes it difficult to think.
You get low and it is still nearly impossible to see. Exit signs are invisible so you cannot find a door, let alone feel if it is
warm. You are wandering blindly in search of an escape route and the smoke continues to thicken.
Yet there is little sense of urgency among these students--only a smattering of giggles and a string of comments about the potency of the enveloping shroud of fog. This was the experience for
many college students around the country. Many campuses have instituted a unique
training program called "The Great Escape On Campus." Recent fires and fire related deaths involving college and university students prompted the need to develop a training program that would educate the students while making it fun and exciting.
Developed by Randall L. Hormann, Executive Director of CampusFireSafety.com
- The Great Escape on
Campus was modeled after the successful NFPA fire safety program. By using "safe smoke," which is the same chemical fog used in fire training programs, dance halls and haunted houses, the disorienting aspects of a
smoke-filled corridor that would be experienced in an actual fire was simulated.
The program is designed to teach students the importance of escape planning and early evacuation in their residence halls, fraternity/sorority house, or off campus housing.
We discuss the realities of fire and what students need to know to be prepared for a fire. Using safe smoke, we do a fire simulation program within a student housing facility. We mimic the conditions that would likely exist in a
dormitory, residence hall, or Greek housing fire. This program is not designed to surprise or scare students. Instead, its purpose is to demonstrate how quickly one can become lost, disoriented, and confused during a fire situation in the place they call "home". Ultimately, the program works to reinforce why early evacuation, escape planning, and practice are vital to students' safety, in a "real-world" way which young adults can relate.
If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a phone call or send an email to Escape@CampusFireSafety.com
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has indorsed the creation and implementation of this very unique training
program. Randall L. Hormann, was a featured lecturer on the "Great Escape on Campus" at the 2000
and 2001 Fall NFPA Meeting in Orlando.
We again lectured about the success of the program at the Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA)
annual conference at Texas A& M University.
We would like to bring the "Great Escape on Campus" to your
school.
Great Escape Theme
Our theme for the "Great Escape on Campus" this year is
"Graduation day - Will YOU be there?" Our program will focus on how
important graduation day is. We will explain why some students will NOT be there because of a fire
or similar situation
.
It is important to show the realities of fire and fire related deaths. In most
every fire fatality on campus and those involving student housing, we are able
to learn from these disasters and increase our emphases as to why fire-safety
education and training is so very important.
Bring the Great Escape on Campus to your Campus.
Campus Fire Safety.com will bring the "Great Escape
on Campus" to your institution. We have several training packages available. We will create a program to meet the needs of your campus, come to your school and present the program. Or, if you would like to do the program yourself, we will supply you with information on how to do it successfully. We have assisted many schools in putting on and developing a program for their campus. Some universities are considering the program during student orientation. This is when both the students and parents are on the campus. This program teaches skills that are not only useable here on campus, but in the real world as well. By teaching students and their families, the schools feel this will present a fun and exciting program, while showing parents and the community that they take fire safety on campus seriously. We are in the process of creating certificates and T-Shirts that can be used to reward students who successfully complete the "Great Escape on Campus".
Corporate Sponsorship
We are looking for organizations who would like to assist us in helping those schools who cannot afford fire safety education and training programs for their students. We would also like to be able to provide fire safety assessments and related programs at a very minimal cost. If you would like to assist us in assisting schools across the country please give us a phone call or send an email to Sponsor@CampusFireSafety.com
FREE Smoke Machines!
As a promotional effort, we are providing free smoke machines to those campuses who purchase a "Great Escape on Campus" training program. For schools who have their own smoke machines, it is very important when mimicking the conditions that would likely exist in a
dormitory, residence hall, or Greek housing fire, that you create this condition to the best of your ability. We have witnessed some institutions who attempted this program with lower-end smoke devices, only to have the students go through the program and leave with a sense of security they will be able to survive a fire situation. This is because halfway through the program, most of the smoke cleared the hallway and the students did not experience the disorientation. Our power smokers are some of the best manufactured. If you would like information about the "Great Escape on Campus" program please feel free to give me a call (my information is available on the contact page) or send an email to Escape@CampusFireSafety.com
From the desk of the Executive Director:
Hello, I am Randy Hormann the founder and Executive Director. Each year more and more fires are occurring on college campuses,
in Greek housing and in student living facilities. In addition, more parents, students and campus administrators are putting a greater effort into fire safety on their campus.
CampusFireSafety.Com was developed to provide an avenue for those needing assistance in their fire safety effort. We provide a wide variety of services from on-site risk assessment audits to educational programs for parents, students,
faculty and staff.
I had the opportunity to speak at the two different NFPA conferences and discuss
student training and education. I met
and interacted with many wonderful people who are responsible for fire safety on their campus. As a member of the NFPA
Education Section, I will continue to strive for more effective training
programs for high school and college students.
I personally have witnessed over 15,000 college students go through this
program.
We cannot emphasis our dedication to campus fire safety. The professionalism and the quality of programs and services we provide
are second to none. As our mission statement above says, our goal is to
"Keep Fire Safety Proactive, Not Reactive".
I would like to encourage you to bring the Great Escape training program to
your campus or facility.
As a promotional effort, we will be giving away smoke machines to
organizations who purchase our Great Escape on Campus training program.
If you are a faculty, staff, student, parent or an organization with questions concerning fire safety at colleges, universities, public or private school districts, and/or fraternity or sorority organization, please feel free to give me a phone call or send me an email at Randy@CampusFireSafety.com
